After an all day force march and the fiasco with the movement control lads at Soest we took up our initial positions in the woods to the East of Bad Sassendorf to take up a blocking position for the reported Soviet push from the North East to relieve pressure from the Breman theater. Lead Soviet forces are reported to be an understrength MRB.

Under my command at the moment is the 3 Coy,Irish Guards with all 3 platoons at full strength. We were able to take with us our MCT troop and the Milan platoon from 4 Coy. $ Coy was also able to plus up each Inf. Platoon with a milan detachment. I decided to leave the Mortors back in the laager as well as lending the Abbots to the Brigade Artillery. I was unable to get replacements for my lost Recce but the Dragoons were finally able to release a troop of Scorpions to us. I was also able to secure a flight of TOW Lynx’s and Harriers if needed.

1st and 2nd platoons deployed into their blocking positions with the MCT’s taking up positions forward and to the right of us. The Scorpion Troop was placed in ambush and would decide when best to attack. I took up position on the far right at the end of 2 platoons position on a hilltop to maintin full control. The milan detachment set up to the North to provide fire down the two lanes for armour to attach from the center. 3 platoon was in reserve 2000 meters back. We finished digging in about 1630 when first reports of Soviet Armour appearing to our right flank caught the MCT’s out of position. WO Williams reported then that BMP’s were appearing to his right flank and I ordered to hold and keep reporting.

Hostilities open with fire from the T-64’s who curiously fired at 2 platoon with no effect but the recce BMP’s were able to claim a transport from 2 Plt. We were able to service a T-64 as well as 2 BMP’s and I am assuming their charges as no one escaped the conflageration of the milan missile hits. WO Williams reported that he was being engaged by the BMP’s facing him and had lost one track and was preparing to be assaulted. 2 Plt came under fire from the recce section which managed to kill a section of 3rd squad. This was to be the beginning of a long day for 2 Plt.

Ivan made a full court press on 2 Plt with the arrival of the BMP’s with their Infantry and fired on their flank as well as the T-64’s assaulting my position on the hilltop. WO Williams reprting being assaulted by Infantry then going off air. Communications could not be reastablished and I assume a total write off. 2 Plt feels the brunt of the attack and end up taking 70% casulties but manage to hang on. I was forced to abandon the hilltop and take up a position in the woods between 1 and 2 Plt to help rally the lads. A call for reinforcements manged to bring in all of our air assets and WO McCloud reprting that he is taking a BMP Coy under fire and killed 2 of the 3.
The Lynx’s reported Shilkas behind a wooded area and took them under fire killing one and causing the other 3 to seek cover. Amazingly they did not shoot at the Lynx’s and it looks like they would not be able to engage the Harriers!! Some relief at last?? The Harriers made their first pass and manage to kill the MRB Commander along with his APC. The boys in the 432’s get into the fight and engage the Inf with the GPMG assisting the 1 Plt tracks get a fire team as well as a RPG team.

WO McCloud reports 2 Scorpions are bailed due to BMP fire. All of 1 Plt tracks are lost to enemy action on the left flank as the last light of day fades. WO McClouds reports that he has to abandon his position as he has lost 3 of the 4 Scorpions and the crews were piled on his track. The Lynx’s reposition to a new firing position and the Harriers come back for a second pass causing 1 Shilks to take cover. # Plt arrives and takes up positions to the right and rear of the remnants of 2 Plt and move their tracks out to block any BMPs from flanking them. 3 Plt takes the Inf and their BMPs under fire killing 1 BMP as well as a fire team in the open. The 432’s left on the right take the infantry in the woods to our front right and rake them with GPMG fire killing 2 fire teams and a RPG team.
