Brewup in Brandenburg

Misha Romanov

It was a chilly morning when Hauptman Rommel gave the order to move out with his expanded mechanized infantry company that had been augmented with two platoons of M113 infantry from the 142 PzGrn battalion. This gave his 143rd PzGren Alpha Kompanie a strength of 10 platoons and a total of 12 Milan launchers and three Jaguar 1s to counter any Soviet armor that might be pushing into Brandenburg this fine morning. For a change the kompanie would get support from the Luftwaffe, when they showed up of course. The kompanie would also have a platoon of Gepards to protect them from air attack as well as flush enemy infantry out of any buildings they chose to occupy. (Admin note) We were playing two 64 point companies using the Brandenburg scenario. So Alpha company moved out to prepare to defend their sector of the defensive belt but then got word that they would have to advance rapidly on two prongs to seize key terrain and prevent the Soviets from getting and holding the two sites. So the kompanie would be split in two directions and in essence attacking forward rather than defending as they are better suited to do. Such is the life of the infantry.

The battlefield is a road junction just east of the main city. Fields of fire would be constrained more than is desired.
Alpha Kompanie split the unit and sent infantry and Gepards west to prevent the Soviets push from grabbing their initial objective.
Our recce platoon pushed out west and gave our other mech platoons a head start toward the northern objective in hopes of outpacing the soviet forces which seemed fixated on running for the southern objective, possibly hoping to get reserves to cut off our northern advance.
1st platoon pushed forward to grab the high ground and pllanned to hide in the rough rocky hills of the north. To their surprise a Soviet BMP 2 platoon and one T-64 ran out of hiding off camera to bring the fight to our troops. (Don't have BMPs yet so we had to proxy with what I have.) 1st platoon got the high ground and was not under any serious fire.
To prevent 1st platoon from achieving a victory in the north the enemy commander charged forward to contest the high ground with hopes of holding on for a couple turns since his BMPs were either bailed out from Milan and Marder fire or bogged in the woods.
We rushed 2nd platoon forward to take on the Soviet infantry moving toward the southern objective and shifted our Gepards a bit north to engage the enemy recce BMPs. Unfortunately or Gepards had trouble hitting their marks and the return fire was devastatingly bad for us.
Our Gepards were way down in strength and moved on the enemy again hoping they could get some kills. They failed and were spanked hard in return. Scratch one platoon. At the same time our Marders and infantry were taking a toll on the enemy and slowly killing them off. At this rate we would soon eliminate them and could then focus on the T-64s.
Up north 1st platoon passed their blitz move and got Milans and panzerfausts as well as Marders and Luchs in position to engage the enemy. Expert fire killed the enemy commander and damaged and bailed the BMP 2s again.
The southern battle rages on with 2nd platoon surviving the many rounds thrown at them.
Things continued to go badly for the Soviets in the south. The dice gods had forsaken them and they just could not get any hits or kills which was extremely good for my mech platoon in the hills. AS we were still contesting the objective it looked like the fight in the north would decide the battle.
1st platoon was in total control of the northern key terrain and continued to pound the enemy's BMPs. With the only BMP carrying a troop inside unable to remount and being too far from the objective the game was over in 3 turns and the German infantry had carried the day. Our Luftwafe brotherns must have been out for beer and schnitzle since we had not seen them for the entire battle and failed our one roll for reserves.
