Laughing it up in Leipzig

50 POINTS
West German
Oberst Hunts
VS Warsaw Pact
Jeremy

Well, It finally happened, I got to battle a Warsaw Pact opponent. We rolled and got Guantlet as the scenario and our battle was on the dry and dusty portion of the city. It was a clear day when the Allied forces deployed across the battlefield and prepared for an assault by the Soviet forces they saw building to their front. They seemed to have T-64 tanks in their force which could be a bit of a challenge with no air cover and no tanks in support of our Mechanized Infantry formations. We better dig in and make those holes deep as the excrement was about to hit the oscillator. I have to say that we had a great time gaming and had lots of laughs. In fact, I should have named this battle LOL in Leipzig because we spent much of the time doing just that. These 50 point games are still tough on a 4×4 table, especially when you have a crap load of infantry. The Panzergrenadiers were deploying with some new American infantry units and the Kompanie commander was not sure how they would react in the battle so he had a meeting with them.

Our Kompanie of the 143rd Pzgrns prepared to rapidly push forward to sieze the critical terrain to our south. It had to be held at all cost. Since the key terrain was in the woods we were able to use our recce platoon to scout forward and allowed us to move our infantry ahead since there was no enemy to be seen.
The enemy seemed to be massing for an all out push to the south to race to the key terrain.
Enemy units moved to begin their push toward the objective but were unable to bring any allied units under fire.
Soviet MRC and tank units rushed forward to grab the key terrain but were met by our own mechanized infantry pushing forward with mounted and foot slogging advances on the objective. This looked like it was going to be a very bloody fight. It is a good thing that we had planty of infantry to hold the ground.
On the northern flank we sent our Marders to deal with the enemy rer units in an attempt to flank their advance. They were able to kill one Spandrel but the other would hang on for a long time.
By the end of turn two our Marders were pushing up to the enemySpandrels and maneuvered into the streets to take on enemy BMPs.
Turn three was very bloody as both sides slugged it out around the main objective. We lost some Marders and M113s but the enemy lost some BMPs, Infantry and tanks. Our Milans and Panzerfausts were able to score some hits while the Dragons just bounced off of the enemy T-64s.
Our infantry and Marders were taking a toll on the enemy BMPs but had a hard time killing tanks.
The biggest threat was the T-64s and we managed to get a Milan shot on one and get a kill. We were slowly trimming the enemy forces down while they were getting frustrated trying to kill our infantry inthe buildings and foxholes.
Oh Crap! That's a big gun you have there. Some meeting engagements are very bad. The blast from the gun was enough to scare the Luchs and cause it to run for the rear.
Mission success in the north. Our Marders were able to kill the last Spandrel and two ZSUs which opened the road toward the enemy ADA unit.
Back in the south our infantry were holding strong and the enemy continued to lose vehicles to Panzerfausts, Milans and rifle fire. All the enemy infantry were killed off and their remaining BMPs headed for the rear.
It was all or nothing for the enemy and they moved all of their remaining tanks toward the objective to tryand push our infantry off of the objective. This was met with more Milan, PzFst, and mg fire.
We kept killing off the enemy as he tried to dig us out of our holes but we just layed lower in them.
We held out in our foxholes until the last of the enemy was killed or retreated. There were very few of them left. Our plan had worked and we were able to destroy the enemy and hold our objective. We had met the enemy and he was ours.

A great AAR! Too bad about the outcome, but at least the Reds came out to play this time.

The Soviet player rushed forward to try and get to, and push me off of the objective before I could adjust enough forces. Unfortunately, I had Milan cross fire that made it hard for him. I also had three infantry platoons around the objective that really caused him fits in assault. All of the Milans, PzrFasts, Dragons and Laws, not to mention a crap load of infantry and M113 fire pretty much annihilated his infantry before they could do anything and repulsed his tank assaults. He agreed that he needed mor infantry but at 50 points that was tough for him. He split his stuff into two 50 point units so the other player could play Red forces.

oops this last comment was for the other battle. Pardon my error.

Some hate the desert terrain. Oh well, that is all I have and the other players were on the European terrain. The color of the terrain doesn’t matter as long as there is terrain and cover for both sides. My opponent is a very experienced FOW player starting to play TY. He went for it but it did not work. He had to roll 6s to hit me and I rolled very well on my saves. He did win one assault and pushed the infantry out of the woods but not out of contention of the objective. That and my Luchs was motivated and he just could not role the six to hit it. He was down to two partial platoons out of six and I was down 1 out of eight and moving everything closer to him. He just didn’t have the numbers to take me out at that point.

I hate the sand. Love the report, great win.

  • Col. Lotgering says:

Nicely done. The Soviets had some balls, going in with everything they had straight from the start. And that they did bad against the infantry, was that because of their bad skill to hit in assaults? Or was it the determination of your infantry? I always have bad results when fighting MBTs in close combat.

  • Captain Spuds says:

nice report easy to follow with good pictures, that sand gets everywhere don’t it?
    thanks
