So this is the second battle that we played – more testing of the Leo 2 vs T-64. We swapped sides to see how that affected it.

Set up for Battle 2- we basically swapped sides, and gave the T-64s a more defensible position

West Germans "won" the roll off this time and got to go first...... yey!... Seriously we need to change this, the winner of the roll off should choose. I think we should house rule it.

Soviet deployment
German Deployment

West German - Turn 1

West German Leopards Advance
Basically my dice were on fire this game!!

The Leopards advanced on the right, successfully blitzed (18", got to love it) and got into a position to fire on the T-64s behind the woods. They killed one T-64 and bailed another. The Leopards behind the hill got into hull down positions, and shot at the T-64s that were in view but concealed. Rolled well but only killed 1, and bailed another.

Moskva could have done a better job hiding his troops at deployment, a lesson learnt.

Soviet Turn 1

Soviet T-64s fight back, but accuracy was obviously affected my their advance. Krupp steel stays strong!

Soviet Turn 1- all bailed tanks got back in at the urging of their political officers, the T-64s on the right went hull down, to get a shot but still be concealed, a successful blitz meant they could shoot their Songsters. They were out of range of their guns, but the Songsters were still in range, which is a great improvement compared to the T-72. They fired and killed one of the Leopards that were hull down behind the hill.

The tanks on the left advanced and tried to take down the smaller Leo 2 platoon, Unfortunately they all missed but 2 ( out of 6) and the Germans rolled 5 and 6 to save. Not good.

German Turn 2

Germans do a tactical re position
German Panzers return fire

The smaller Leo 2 platoon, blitzes back then moves hull down on the hill to fire on the advancing T-64s, their ruse to lure them into the open worked, and 3 T-64s were still in view, 6 shot , 6 hits and 3 more coffins for 3 brothers. This was a bit risky , but I was betting I would not lose too many Leo's when I drew them out, so I could then use my superior movement to get back into a good firing position, it worked, this time.

The larger platoon on the hill with the HQ, fired back at the hull down T-64s, they killed one more and bailed another. They then scoot and shoot back out of view

Soviet Turn 3 - When in doubt attack??

Soviets sick of being target practice, try for an old fashioned cavalry charge
The T-64s on the right try to move behind cover

The Soviets thought that the best way was to get closer, and blitzed again and dashed to get as close as possible, they needed to get within 16" so they could have the best chance in knocking the Leopard 2 out.

The other T-64s sought cover behind the forest

West German - Turn 3

No more T-64s
and thats it....

While the odds were not in the T-64s favour, once again my dice won the game for me.

We wont be doing this again, its not fair on the Soviet player, also as other more veteran WARSAW pact players have shown, it is much better to use smaller 3 tank platoons of T-64s. Also smoke may have helped to shield a soviet advance.

We will play again this week.

T-64s retreat and go back for repairs

Another good win, but hey, aren’t you the guy who MAKES his own dice? Just sayin’ 😉

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Yes agree Red Alert, the german player needs to have broken dice, and good dice for the Soviet players. I think what the soviet player needs is 2 units of 10 T-55 and them some T-64s for the coup de grace! But i dont have all 20 T-55s put together. We were also talking about a huge tank only battle, it would be interesting. We all had fun, but I dont think we would do it again at such small points. It gives too much advantage to the WG player

This is where the Leo 2 excels, in a straight Tank to Tank duel. Funnily we have been thinking of doing the same this week.

But strong armor, excellent gun, high skill level. The Soviet player must be very good with concentration of force to stand a chance.

Well played and I hope everyone had fun 🙂
