Good evening. This is Sally Sparrow with the BBC World News!
I have just been speaking with a cavalry officer who was stationed in Berlin at the start of the war. His troop broke through the Communist forces encircling Berlin to link up with the American strike force pushing towards Berlin. Since then, the Soviet forces have been throwing everything the have into strong counterattacks that have been steadily driving the American spearhead further and further from Berlin. The fighting has been intense, I would say the most intense that I have yet seen.

With supplies running short, moral started to take a hit until we heard the good news from the Hamburg sector. The news has gone through the ranks like lightning, re-emboldening the troops to hold their ground and restart the advance on Berlin.
